Takotsubo syndrome diagnosis: the biomarker-based BioTAK score
Currently, takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is diagnosed based on clinical examination, medical, psychiatric, and neurological history, repeated cardiac imaging, and coronary angiography, leading to delayed diagnosis and potentially avoidable invasive procedures. Can biomarkers help the early differentiation of TTS from acute coronary syndrome (ACS)?
BioTAK score included biomarkers of myocardial wall stress (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide), vasoconstriction and anxiety regulation (peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase), atherosclerotic plaque instability (soluble lectin-like oxidised lowdensity lipoprotein receptor-1), and lipid metabolism (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), along with sex. The simple five-item BioTAK score can support early diagnosis of TTS with high accuracy prior to invasive coronary angiography.
The novel BioTAK score is an externally validated non-subjective tool to support early rule-in and rule-out of TTS in patients presenting with suspected ACS.
